Head of Payroll and Pensions
Location: Derby ( Hybrid )
Salary: £62,484 - £72,865 ( Band 8 )
Purpose of the role:
you will be responsible for the overall direction, development and performance of the pay and pension team. Leading the team to deliver high quality and efficient payroll and pensions service whilst ensuring compliance with legislation and regulations. Ensuring internal and external customer satisfaction through communication and feedback
What your Typical day looks like:
- Leading a team to deliver an enhanced and efficient pay and pension service to the business in compliance with legislation, regulation and in accordance with contractual requirements
- Ensuring all payrolls are processed in in compliance with HMRC requirements and employee payments are processed accurately and timely in accordance with DHU timescales and contractual requirements
- Provide finance with required information and reports for HMRC, Pension and other 3rd party payments
- Deliver the completion of Year End processes, ensuring payroll accounts are checked and balanced in accordance with financial regulations including the production and submission P11d’s information and payment where required
- Responsible for ensuring that the organisation remains fully compliant following any changes in payroll and pension legislation or regulations. Identifying and reporting the impact of any changes to the organisation where necessary
- Managing the Payroll and Pensions Service within DHU and any external customers, ensuring delivery. Identifying and implementing any changes to improve service delivery
- Audit, develop and implement Payroll policies and procedures which are efficient and ensure internal controls are suitably communicated, understood, and managed
- Final point of escalation for complex employee payroll, pension and benefit queries
- Identifying changes and developments required to the pay and pension service to meet the changing requirements of the current operations and in preparation for future challenges
- Ensure payroll systems are updated when required following legislative changes and new payroll software updates and developments are tested and communicated
- Leading the Payroll and Pension team in projects to support new contracts including TUPE transfers. Attending meetings, checking due diligence, supporting pay and pensions services team
- Ensure that pay and pension data storage and archiving is compliant with GDPR

To be a successful Head of payroll and pensions, you will need:
- CIPP DIPLOMA (Chartered Institute of payroll professionals) or equivalent qualification/experience
- Strong technical knowledge ok UK payroll and pensions legislation, tax, NI and auto enrolment
- Extensive experience leading payroll and pensions operations in a medium to large organisation
- proven record of stakeholder management at senior levels
- Ability to manage change effectively and deliver complex projects
- Experience of implementing process improvements, system enhancements, and driving efficiencies
