Sustainability Assistant

Working closely with the Sustainability Net Zero Lead, you’ll support the delivery and monitoring of our Green Plan, contribute to vital data collection and analysis, and help drive forward initiatives that reduce our environmental impact. Competitive salary: £26530-£29114
Generous annual leave entitlement: Standard 25 days + 8 bank holidays, increasing with service up to 33 days + 8 bank holidays. Pro Rata/ Per Annum
What your typical day looks like:
- Assist with Sustainability Projects: Support the implementation of various sustainability projects, including those outlined in DHU’s Green Plan, with a particular focus on energy reduction, waste management, and resource optimisation.
- Data Collection & Reporting: Assist in the gathering and analysis of utility consumption, carbon footprint, and environmental impact data, ensuring timely and accurate reporting to support the Carbon Reduction Plan and other sustainability goals.
- Support the Net Zero Strategy: Work closely with the Sustainability Net Zero Lead to ensure that DHU’s operations are aligned with the NHS net-zero targets, including identifying opportunities for improvement in carbon management and energy efficiency.
- Sustainability Communication: Help develop communication materials that promote sustainability practices across DHU. Assist in creating internal campaigns, reports, and presentations to engage staff and stakeholders.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Assist in managing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to promote DHU’s sustainability initiatives, ensuring that projects align with the wider NHS sustainability and net zero agenda.
- Monitor Sustainability Progress: Track the progress of sustainability initiatives and report on key performance indicators (KPIs), ensuring that any issues or delays are flagged to the Net Zero Lead.
- Policy & Procedure Support: Assist the Sustainability Net Zero Lead in maintaining sustainability policies, ensuring they reflect current legislation, best practices, and DHU’s green objectives.
- Assist with Training & Awareness: Support the development and delivery of training sessions or workshops to promote sustainability awareness and practices among DHU staff and stakeholders.
- Administrative Support: Provide general administrative assistance to the Net Zero Lead, including scheduling meetings, maintaining project files, and tracking project milestones.
To be a successful Sustainability Assistant you will need:
Passion for sustainability and reducing environmental impact in healthcare.
Strong organisational, time-management, and multitasking abilities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present data clearly.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Analytical skills with keen attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and collaborate within a team.
Previous experience in sustainability or environmental roles (preferably in healthcare or public sector).
Knowledge of carbon footprint analysis and sustainability metrics.
Familiarity with NHS sustainability and Net Zero policies (e.g., HTM 07-01).
Creative, proactive, and adaptable with a problem-solving mindset.
