Following a period of remarkable growth, we are looking for a dynamic Health & Safety Lead to elevate our management of health and safety and drive continuous improvement in this critical area.

The role involves promoting a positive health and safety culture across DHU Healthcare by collaborating with colleagues throughout the organisation. The post holder will ensure that key stakeholders are regularly updated on the team's progress, developments, and overall performance, while working to maintain a safe and compliant environment.

Competitive salary: £46,148 (Band 7)

What your typical day looks like:
  • Provide professional advice and support in the development of the organisations strategic direction and performance review for health and safety.
  • To act as DHUs competent person with support from the Health and Safety Team and external consultants.
  • Investigate and report on health and safety incidents across the estate including the identification of root cause, identifying trends and making recommendations to ensure risk of reoccurrence is reduced.
  • Provide assurance to the Board of compliance with health and safety statutory duties.
  • Develop, and administer procedures to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and best practice guidance.
  • Formulate new Health & Safety policies and procedures and revise existing policies, taking into account changes in legislation and recommendations made by the Health and Safety Executive.
  • Produce Health & Safety reports, including quarterly reports and an annual report, within required timescales.
  • Ensure health and safety risks are identified and communicated to the relevant committee, ensuring regular review to reduce the likelihood and impact of risk.
  • Maintain systems of auditing and monitoring health and safety, including health and safety self-inspection checklists, across the main and peripheral sites to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and best practice and to ensure the environment is of a high standard. Produce subsequent reports and review associated action plans to ensure good progress of health and safety issues.
  • Ensure compliance with, the HSE / CQC / NHS Improvement or other external assurance agencies standards relating to health and safety. Devise and implement action plans to ensure compliance with these standards.
To be a successful Health and Safety Lead, you’ll need:
  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience providing health and safety services within the NHS, the healthcare sector or in a large complex organization.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of health & safety legislation codes of practice, standards and any other regulatory requirements with the ability to interpret and advise on their implications within the NHS and healthcare sector. 
  • Experience of working in health and safety in a senior role.
  • Risk management skills.
  • Ability to work with colleagues at all levels, developing strong and collaborative working relationships within the team and with key stakeholders.
  • Experience of successfully managing teams.
  • Proven experience of policy development and implementation.
  • There will be a requirement for the postholder to visit locations within the DHU estate and therefore must be able to drive as the use of public transport is not always possible.
